Veteran Teachers in MO and KS Receive Low Pay, Take Second Jobs, Qualify for Public Benefits

Annual salaries for veteran Missouri teachers are below the median state income. Teachers in Missouri and Kansas who head households of four or more qualify for multiple state aid programs designed to assist low-income residents. In Missouri, more than 16 percent of teachers take second jobs to make ends meet (that isn’t counting summer jobs), and in Kansas almost a quarter of teachers moonlight during the school year.

Those facts are courtesy of a new report out this week from the Center for American Progress, a Washington D.C.-based think tank with a liberal bent.
